Microsoft OmniTouch: Turn your entire world into a touchscreen

Those who lay down to the saying that bigger is always better, and as a result struggle with the small size of the screen of their mobile device, your pain is shared. It seems that finding real estate to work and operate with on mobile devices is a constant battle and a hindrance on productivity. There is hope, however, as some researchers have heard the cries of the frustrated users who simply do not have enough space.
Meet OmniTouch and PocketTouch, technologies that use projection and sound harmonics to create touchscreens out of any surface in the world. Coming out of their Redmond-based labs, Microsoft researchers using Kinect technology and pico projectors created the two applications because they wanted to take advantage of the vast amount of flat spaces in the world. They asked their people to imagine what it would be like to have the biggest touchscreen they could think of, only limited by the size of the physical space they could project onto. It was out of this visioning that OmniTouch was born.
Using a shoulder mounted pico projector, and aKinect-like depth of field sensor, OmniTouch creates a multitouch surface that users can interact with using their hands (video demo below). Say you were paying bills or trying to split a tab with a large part at a restaurant, you could project a calculator on the table for everyone to see, or use a whiteboard to figure out your cash flow. A user could even make a part of their body touchable for making phone calls or sending an email. Right now the shoulder mount is a bit bulky, but can be brought down to a manageable size in future releases.
PocketTouch is a more discreet application, in the fact that it allows users to interact with the screens of their mobile devices while in their pockets. Using a set of sensors that can detect touch even through cloth, PocketTouch makes it possible to send a text or to interact with a music application by making gestures or tracing symbols through a pocket. For example, if you’re on a crowded plane or train and can’t get to your pocket to pull your phone out, you could fast forward the song by swiping your pant leg.
Both technologies have exciting applications: Perhaps we will see a Xbox game or remote that uses the shoulder mount to allow users to interact with their games. To be able to hack consoles in Deus Ex on a wall or hand would be sublime. Being able to change your ringer settings in a meeting without taking the handset out of a pocket would be a life saver in several instances. Making this useful for today’s computing needs is not something that is way off in the distance, but something that is going to have an impact sooner or later. This technology would sooner or later be used in phones and would definitely replace smartphones.

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE

Samsung has shown off the Galaxy Note at IFA 2011, a huge 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED handset which comes complete with a stylus called the S Pen. The Galaxy Note has a 1.4GHz ARM-based dual-core processor inside. The 5.3-inch screen is WXGA resolution (1,280x800) and, as we've come to expect from Samsung's OLED screens, everything is super bright and colours stand out brilliantly - even though it is the largest such display ever fitted to a mobile device.

Apple iPhone 4S

Apple’s iPhone 4S is a solid follow-up to the popular iPhone 4. The 4S is a refinement of a very good idea. The iPhone 4S looks exactly like its predecessor. Much of what’s new on the 4S is due to iOS 5, a major update that includes iMessage and the updated notification system. These changes are significant and, by and large, excellent. iMessage works well. Getting unlimited free MMS and SMS with anyone else using iOS 5 is a nice feature. iMessage also lets you see when someone else is typing a response to you. Twitter is integrated into iOS 5. Few of the major updates are Siri-fied and iCloud.

SAMSUNG STRATOSPHERE

Verizon wants to bring you to the upper echelons of the smartphone world with the introduction of their latest device, the Samsung Stratosphere. This particular smartphone is part of the Samsung Galaxy S family, where it will be made available online as well as at brick-and-mortar stores from October 13th onwards. Being slim in nature, this is also touted to be the first 4G LTE smartphone that hails from Verizon Wireless’ stable that will sport a 5-row QWERTY keyboard for quick and easy messaging.
Specially designed to please your eyes from all angles, the Samsung Stratosphere will feature Samsung’s very own 4 Super AMOLED display in addition to B2B-enabled connectivity services from Cisco, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support as well as playing nice with secure remote device management from Sybase. The Samsung Stratosphere clearly has the business professional in its sights, thanks to robust data management support. For those who wonder whether it has what it takes to be a multimedia powerhouse, read on after the jump.
The Stratosphere is capable of delivering fast download speeds of 5Mbps to 12Mbps and achieve upload speeds of 2Mbps to 5Mbps whenever you are in a 4G Mobile Broadband coverage area. Since this handset targets business professionals, I don’t think they’d be too bothered with working out the kinks on a virtual keyboard, preferring the accuracy of a physical keyboard instead which Samsung duly provides with its 5-row QWERTY keyboard
Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the operating system of choice, and with this bit of information, you can be sure that it will boast support for Google Mobile Services such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Google Search, and Google Maps – not to mention being able to enjoy plenty of apps from the Android Market. Other hardware specifications include a 1.3-megapixel camera in the front, a 5-megapixel camera at the back that does HD recording too, Mobile Hotspot Capability and DLNA connectivity. If you do not want to waste bandwidth on a 4G connection, then there is always Wi-Fi to back you up.

LG DOUBLE PLAY (WITH DUAL SCREEN)

This is the LG Doubleplay, a smartphone by LG that has two screens.
Originally, it was code-named the Flip II, but I guess they decided that name was too sequel-ish. I’ve never really seen a phone like this with a 320 x 480 HVGA main display, a secondary display, and a QWERTY keyboard that is split down the middle like that. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that both screens are touchscreens.
Not much else is known about this phone, and I suppose that it was just a matter of time before someone created a flip-phone with two screens. I would have thought that the designer of such a phone would have phased out a QWERTY keyboard entirely, and have gone with a touchscreen keyboard on the secondary screen.
We do know that the phone has a 5 Megapixel rear camera with LED flash, as well as a front facing camera. We don’t know the resolution of the front-facing one, though.
The LG Doubleplay is planned to launch on November 2nd for a price of $150 with contract. It looks like users will have to go through T-Mobile to get it, and it will be running with some Android.

This is undoubtedly a unique device. That said, the keyboard looks very cramped because of that second screen. As for the second screen’s usability or usefulness – well, we’ll just say we won’t bet on it being anything more than a gimmick. A desperate attempt to differentiate. But we’ll see. Maybe this will be a best-selling device, who knows. Though we kind of doubt it.

MOTOROLA DROID RAZR WITH QHD SUPER AMOLED DISPLAY SERVICES

Motorola DROID RAZR aka DROID HD is rumored to be the thinnest Android smartphone Moto has ever made, with Kevlar chassis and Gorilla glass body, a large 4.3" display, 8MP camera, and something called an HD front-facing camera.
First of all, it has a 4.3-inch QHD display, but it's not your run-of-the-mill LCD but a Super AMOLED display. There is a good chance that it will be a PenTile-matrix display but most people couldn't care less about the underlying technology when the actual image quality happens to be eye-poppingly good.
Other specs include 4G LTE support, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording and image stabilization, HD front camera and support for Motorola's WebTop accessories. The design looks really attractive and being a RAZR it should be really thin as well. The DROID nomenclature suggests it will be available on Verizon, although there could be a version for other networks and markets (called the Spyder).
There are speculations that droid razr will be available on verizon wireless only although there could be a version for other network and market (called the Spyder).

CHEAPEST TABLET PC

The ‘world’s cheapest tablet PC’, Aakash, is being produced at less than $ 35 (around Rs 1,750) per unit, but the replacement warranty attached to it has led to an increase in its price by about $14 to $49.98 per piece. The government has asked for a special replacement warranty. Government has asked not to repair it (Aakash Tablet)... You will have to replace it... which is a big cost.
Mr. Tuli further explained that the ratio of defects in any device sold in India is higher when compared to America because of the harsh climatic conditions in New Delhi.
“Those kinds of costs add to it. This (Aakash) is Rs 2,200... It can be Rs 1,700. Actual manufacturing cost still is less than Rs 1,750. But there are all these other conditions which take it above Rs 1,750,” he said.
On July 22, 2010, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had unveiled a prototype of the device and announced that it would be developed for use at around $35 per unit.
To ensure complete transparency and a level playing-field, the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT) decided to task IIT Rajasthan, Jodhpur, with the job of procuring and testing these devices, based on the design and specifications that the mission’s team had finalised.
IIT Jodhpur had floated tenders and the lowest bidder quoted an ex-factory price of $37.98, which was close to the cost mentioned by the minister.
This cost comprised components and material, as well as manufacturing expenses. The final landed price of $49.98 (Rs 2,276) per unit included taxes, levies, and charges like freight and insurance, servicing and documentation, etc.
Mr. Tuli said people have been challenging the development of such a low cost device, but by selling this device to the government, Datawind is making enough profits, which even allows him to donate 10 per cent of the total profit to charity.
Mr. Tuli said that over-and-above the production cost, Datawind pays almost 20 per cent as taxes, which add to the cost of the device.
“If we bring it after making in China, then there would have been no issues, because it’s exempted from duties. I would have not been required to pay 4 per cent VAT (value added tax). Getting it from China and selling in India would have not make it exciting. Therefore, we made it at Hyderabad,” Mr. Tuli said.
He said that company will sell the commercial version of Aakash in the market for Rs 2,999, which -- unlike the government’s Aakash tablet with a 1-year replacement warranty -- will carry only a 30-day replacement warranty.
Mr. Tuli has said that he will sell the government Aakash tablets for Rs 1,750 if the government orders 10 lakh units.
At present, Datawind has an order for supplying 1 lakh units to the government.
The government is buying the tablets for Rs 2,276 per unit and giving them to education institutes at a 50 per cent subsidy.
